So here are the choices -
- Tony Blair leaves some time very soon
- He tries to hang on until after Christmas, but before May
- He stays on until after the local May elections
What impact will the third choice have on the parties’ prospects? Which party would benefit most if he stayed on?
I only raise the questions because others are doing so. Personally I’m not analytical about the whole business. All I’d like to see is a little bit of consultation with the voters.
What do you think?
If you’d like to be reminded of the original Third Way, here is the link.
In short, it started with Bill Clinton in 1992 and aimed to respond to global influences regardless of Left & Right ideologies. Tony Blair later adopted it and based his New Labour project on it.

Blimey! I though I was the only one who felt this way, until the level of chagrin became clear at the Labour Party Conference. I mean, we all know the guy’s gotta go sometime, but for heaven’s sake! Three stunning (and historic) election victories, brilliant work done in my field in particular (employment rights). I’ve been posting on the Guardian CiF site (as Seasiderock) and on the Compass website (Seasider) and get a thorough slagging whenever I do.
I find David Aaronovitch’s weblog at The Times is also a pretty good place to visit.
How great to find somewhere to post with people who feel the same way. I’ll be sending a few more posts your way.

Hi Seasider, and thanks so much for your post. I know what you mean about feeling kind of lonely. Me too, much of the time. The only thing that’s kept me going is the thought that the PM probably feels lonelier still. Of course it’s probably the case that he’s had enough of this kind of snarling from the wings (and even from the front row much of the time!) and will just be happy to get out of politics completely. Still maybe one day he’ll come across this blog and let me know if I should just get on with my life!! Now that would be a good comment to end on, don’t you think? Of course he won’t do so because keeping his cards close to his chest is his only weapon at the moment it seems, e.g. not backing Brown. Keep it up Prime Minister. Don’t let the b******s grind you down!
I would appreciate a few more positive postings here, btw, thanks very much. The CiF sites are full of the “hang-and-flog Blair brigade” (preferably, it seems, in that order by these peace-and-love types! )
I’ll make a visit to Aaronovitch’s blog now, I think. Thanks for the pointer.
