13 February 2009:
Muzzammil “Mo” HASSAN, the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, a Buffalo, NY based Islamic television Network he helped pioneer in 2004 amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light, reportedly admitted to police that he beheaded his wife at the television station yesterday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37, who just last month, filed for and received an order of protection against her husband.
According to police, HASSAN walked into the Orchard Park police station shortly after 6:00 PM yesterday and admitted that he murdered his wife earlier in the afternoon. While Erie County, NY District Frank A. Sedita III stated about the murder that “”…this is the worst form of domestic violence possible,” it is more pertinent to understand that the act of beheading in Islam is frequently and closely associated with “honor killings.”
The intentional mainstream media obfuscation of honor killings and the act of beheading as both relate to Islamic fundamentalist practices & beliefs is anticipated, especially in this case. (For a good primer about Islam and honor killings, please read this 2008 article written by Robert Spencer).
HASSAN and Bridges TV of Buffalo has been a focus of investigation by the Northeast Intelligence Network in the past. The Northeast Intelligence Network made several inquiries to HASSAN and Bridges TV about their relationship with al Manar television – inquiries that HASSAN and his station refused to answer.
Meanwhile, HASSAN was charged with second-degree murder and has been arraigned by Orchard Park, NY Village Justice Deborah Chimes. He is currently in custody at the Erie County Holding Center.

SECOND DEGREE MURDER – SECOND DEGREE?
As a Brit I was intrigued by what this classifications mean. How does Second Degree compare to First Degree Murder.
Second degree murder n. a non-premeditated killing, resulting from an assault in which death of the victim was a distinct possibility. Second degree murder is different from First Degree Murder which is a premeditated, intentional killing, or results from a vicious crime such as arson, rape, or armed robbery. Exact distinctions on degree vary by state. (See: murder, first degree murder, manslaughter)
Whereas this is 1st degree murder:
First degree murder n. although it varies from state to state, it is generally a killing which is deliberate and premeditated (planned, after lying in wait, by poison or as part of a scheme), in conjunction with felonies such as rape, burglary, arson, involving multiple deaths, the killing of certain types of people (such as a child, a police officer, a prison guard, a fellow prisoner), or with certain weapons, particularly a gun. The specific criteria for first degree murder are established by statute in each state and by the United States Code in federal prosecutions. It is distinguished from second degree murder in which premeditation is usually absent, and from manslaughter which lacks premeditation and suggests that at most there was intent to harm rather than to kill. WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM THE COMMON-OR-GARDEN WIFE KILLING?
Sadly more women are murdered by their husbands or partners worldwide than meet their deaths at the hands of outsiders. And too, for all sorts of trite “reasons”, all of which are unjustifiable.
But in my humble opinion, THIS is in a class of its own.
The religious element, (if it has been reported accurately – beheading as an “honour” killing) implies that using an “everyday” instrument to kill – a knife or gun – would not have done the job satisfactorily as regards all the demands of this man’s “faith doctrine”.
Leave aside as incidental that if he had used a gun it would have been classed as ‘first degree’ murder (though death is not guaranteed.) The law is an ass at times, don’t you just think?
It should be a warning to us all. Beheading is and always should be FIRST DEGREE MURDER. Once removed a head will not re-attach itself, I’m afraid. EVER.
This is an abominable act from a man who said his plan in setting up Bridges TV was self-explanatory, to build bridges between communities.
If this doesn’t leave you perplexed and pessimistic as to the chances of anyone, even the great Mr Blair, ever bridging the gap between ‘faiths’, nothing is too much of a challenge for you.

How convenient. A guy murders his wife, and it’s suddenly the “Islamic answer” to everything.
This is racial profiling in all it’s glory. What differentiates this guy from any other dude who takes gun and kills his wife, or burns her body in acid? They’re all murderers. If you consider this is the face of Islam because of what few terrorists probably paid by the CIA to instill the culture of fear in simpletons all over the world and smear the image of Islam. All while getting open ended checks to endless war spending and black ops. You know what these black ops are? You’re looking at them

Qwaider – I don’t accept any of your arguments.
Though I do realise this case may be an “inconvenient truth” for YOU to have to deal with. If this guy had just murdered his wife in the way men, sadly, do every day, using a knife, gun or his hands, this would NOT have been noticed. As it is we are surmising (and we could be proved wrong, of course) that she was having an affair or in some other way “dishonouring” him and his/her family.
The word “dishonour” is never used in western culture. We are NOT so superior that we feel the need to elevate every issue to one about “me, and me alone”. And the term “dishonour” is clearly linked to the Islamic view of women’s place in a male-dominated Sharia/Islamic world. And it seems, you can correct me if I’m wrong here with web links to prove your argument, that beheading is a recognised form of punishment for female adultery.
If you disagree with my take on this – remind me how often we hear of a man dishonouring his wife? And being decapitated because of it? From my understanding in many parts of the Islamic world all a man has to do when he wishes to end his marriage (for whatever reason) is to repeat three times “I divorce you”. Is my understanding of this all a myth?! Please confirm or deny.
We in the west tend to suspect that if she was having an affair it might just indicate that she wasn’t too happy with her marriage. For that, no-one should die. But being beheaded is something we never do in the west. (Very rarely anyway, unless we are particularly disturbed individuals with a penchant for butchery). Never because Christianity/Judaism tells us to do it.
Your other point – “RACIAL profiling”. What codswallop!
It may be open to the charge of religious/political profiling, but it is certainly NOT racial. I condemn ALL followers of Islamicism who advocate violence, whether they be black/white/brown/purple. The idiotic white American Al Qaeda video-compiler and PR man – Adam something or other (as was) – is just as wrong as any other advocate of fundamental radicalism of any other colour. I condemn him too.
All that other moderate followers of moderate Islam need do in order to disabuse the rest of us of this uncomfortable conclusion is to DISOWN this barbaric practice.

Islamic punishment for adultery for a married woman (OR MAN) is the same as the Jewish form of punishment. And the punishment is death, not by beheading. But I doubt that makes any difference.
Dishonor is not a crime in Islam. Nor is it punishable under Islamic law, or even mentioned anywhere. It’s a cultural term that most eastern cultures appear to uphold. (Not limited to Arabs and Muslims, but also far eastern cultures)
In Jordan, we have a problem with “honor” murderers, and we get something like 20 cases every year. Most are shot and not decapitated. That’s 20 out of 6 Million. Or 1 in 300,000. This is WAY LESS than the crime rate in UK and USA.

So in the ongoing battle to eliminate “ignorance” I looked up the word “Qwaiderization”. Apart from the site where you and I got together, it does not seem to exist anywhere on the internet. If it’s your own invention – can I suggest that you make a Wikipedia entry for it, so that we can all get a grip on the theory you so sublimely trust (or one of them). It can go under the overall “doubt is the same as faith” heading recently spouted at that site, unbelievably, as a sensible theory.
RACISM
To answer one of your points – I am NO racist. Never have been and never will be. Right now, and more by osmosis as a result of recent developments (in my country and continent) than by intention or desire, I am anti - ONE thing right now. That is the political/religious high-jacking of western democracy and secular culture in Britain with the unsubtle intention of replacing it, eventually, with another. THAT is what is happening in my country right now, while many of us get on quietly with our lives, blind to it.
The hi-jackers are a conglomeration of mainly innocent followers and ignorant fundamentalist leaders. The followers don’t necessarily realise they are being led and the leaders don’t yet recognise what they are messing with. They will.
My ancestors did not write the 13th Century Magna Carta on which the American constitution is based, JUST to limit the powers of a monarch.
My country, Britain, has welcomed people of all creeds and colours to its shores for decades. We have permitted them all of our freedoms – exactly as we experience them. Freedom of worship; of community organisation where desired; opportunities, in fact encouragement to integrate completely with the rest of us; the use of all our society has to give including social security payments, often for multiple wives (though the native Brit is only allowed one!), health care and education. We have even encouraged the setting up of their own schools if and where that is desired. There are many more mosques in Britain now that Christian churches.
We have bent over backward with the aim of true integration. We have bent over too far – all of us – people of all political persuasions in Britain. This did not start to be an issue recently, within the last decade or so. We have been asleep at the wheel. I came across issues of Somali hatred of Pakistanis more than 20 years ago in education work. Some immigrants – and this is by NO means the majority – have used our liberal laws against us, and we have turned a blind eye, thinking it will get better.
But the chips on the shoulders of SOME are getting bigger.
MY ANSWER TO THAT?
This is NOT the land of their historical familial birth. So, whatever colour they are – I mean WHATEVER COLOUR – they have a choice. There’s an airport nearby. That is exactly what I would do were I ever stupid enough to emigrate, for instance, to a land where equal treatment was not meted out to all, and to both genders.
So yes, I DO think people should get out of Britain if this place does not conform to THEIR desires. Tough. It doesn’t always correspond to mine, yet there is nowhere else I’d rather live. Well, I may soon change my mind on that. Here, you are still allowed to change your mind on ANYTHING! No one executes you for apostasy or stones you for adultery, or hand-chops you for theft.
Compared to Islam, as it is practised in many lands, we are clearly from different and value historical roots. Our values do not always coincide. It took us centuries to get to where we are now, and we are not about to give it up for medieval practises or beliefs.
But no, – I do NOT condemn all of Islam. But I do condemn Islamicism. I even went to the trouble of re-defining Islamism and Islamicism for comparison’s sake. I wrote about it here in order that modern moderate Muslims would not feel that their rights to the word ‘Islam’ and its derivatives had been stolen by radical fundamentalists. THEY should have done that, if they cared. Not left the task to such as me.
SLAVERY
Your ignorance knows few bounds. We abolished slavery here in Britain in 1833 – that’s 176 years ago not 50. America was slower – 1865 – but as a young country it had some catching up with civilisation to do. It is generally agreed that America was still discriminating on colour until about half a century ago. That is NOT the case in Britain.

And we would have criticised him, and argued with him, have no doubt. But my government in its fear of screaming idiots, cancelled it. A Muslim “Lord” threatened to have 10,000 Muslims march on Parliament if Wilders’ visit went ahead. So our shameful government surrendered.
That IS not on. Not at all. No threats.
So, I DO have a deep interest in society and in democracy in my country. As for yours, live and let live, is my approach. You are most welcome to look after YOUR culture, and revel in it. Just don’t assume that because we are tolerant of others here in Britain that you can import YOUR ancient rites here if they are not wanted.
Let people mess with free speech and democracy at their peril. You can only push tolerant Brits so far.
As for most Muslims, I have no prejudices against THEM, but I do feel they owe it to all of us to control and denounce (their) fundamentalists.

The “Second Degree” charge surprised me as well until I read this article.

As you can see, the “murder weapon” has not been found as yet. If the police can prove the poor woman was beheaded with a knife or sword AT the radio station, then the question of “premeditation” will come into play. (Why would you have a knife or sword with you or is that something that radio stations just leave lying around?) If they find that her husband murdered her somewhere other than the station and then took her body TO the station (which seems highly unlikely) his lawyer may try to prove it was not premeditated. If his wife went to the station voluntarily, he probably baited her into the trap. That would be premeditation, indeed. We shall have to wait for the facts to come out.
This case is directly related to the issue of Islam and Honor Killings. It is the “irony” of what Hassan was supposed to “stand for”. He was supposed to be an educator, mediator of a sort. This man was supposed to be an example of the moderate Muslim. To have Qwaider dismiss this situation as an ordinary domestic abuse case goes beyond the pale. Hassan’s voice may have reached millions of people every day. I doubt that he will be proved “nuts”.

Yes, Arlene, it’s disconcerting how the law differentiates. I am not in full knowledge of the facts of course, but it’s not, surely, just a crime of passion, or manslaughter as we call unpremeditated killing here in Britain.
And Qwaider damns himself with his own words, I’m afraid. But he has named a phrase after himself, so perhaps giving us some idea of the importance he attaches to his own words.
His “women’s rights … red herring” attitude is especially worrying, I agree. We just don’t think in these terms in the west. At least I don’t know anyone of either sex who does. Especially since intelligent people know that women are more than half the world’s population, not a minority to be patted condescendingly on the head.
Odd.
He can’t be western.

Would just like to add that Qwaider was right about adultery attracting the death penalty under the ancient laws of Judaism. However the Jews (and Christians) grew out of the nasty bits of their religions many centuries ago. Its about time that Islam did the same.

SOME of us, Kay, read ALL sorts of sources. And SOME of us have yet to make our minds due to the plethora of conflicting information.
Personally I do not think that Islam is as it is portrayed by those who have made their minds up about it as “evil”.
Neither do I think it is fine for ANY religion to have an aim to replace the state, as it seems is Islam’s aim. Prove me wrong on that.
Neither do I think it is right that women are frequently seen as chattels of men in many Islamic countries and often under SOME interpretation of SOME Sharia courts. Prove me wrong on that.
Neither do I agree with executing people (often in barbaric ways) because they have committed adultery, are homosexual or have left their religious beliefs behind them. Prove me wrong on that.
Neither do I agree that Sharia Law should be sneaked into MY country by the front or back door in order to pacify neolithic-minded fools. Prove me wrong on that.
Your suggestion of going to a library or speaking to a RE teacher is laughable. Do you assume we are all teenagers or naive innocents?
It was largely while learning about the major discrepancies between religions as a student of Religion that I saw the light. There IS no supernatural light, imho. (Note: I do not agree with Mr Blair on everything). But I am prepared to accept that people of belief are genuine. And that they mean well, since many of my best friends of ALL religions are honourable and lovely people. That’s all the proof I need.
My faith in people, MOST people, is something I trust.

Every time such crimes, comes to light, the main concern is not with the victim/s, but rather ensuring that no one associates it with Islam! “Islam uber Alles”, even the right to human life! Human rights are not vested in any religion or ideology, but rather the individual. So no apologies for any offense which may arise therefrom when it comes to my right, to state the facts!
An “honor” killing is a structured phenomenon and cannot be linked with domestic violence or crimes of passion. The murder is generally planned by a village council of tribal men. Approval is given, how it is to be carried out, the killer is nominated, usually a younger brother and the time scale for its commission. It has the above all else, the approval and acceptance from the wider community. It is about as cold blooded as one could find and it is first degree murder!
In most Muslim countries, the crime generally happens within the family and falls under “morals”. It is determined –and overseen by the mullahs- under Islamic Sharia where the defense of “honor” practically exonerates the murderer. The punishment is often so minimal as to render it not only meaningless but also apologetic. Islam sanctions violence against women and children thereby providing the moral basis for the general lack of respect for the basic fundamental human rights of women and children in Islamic societies.
Violence against women while it does happen in the West, fall outside the orthodoxy and teachings of Christianity and is generally punished to the full extent of the law.
Finally, it is cultural alright, one which has been incorporated/codified into Islamic Sharia law and has spread since its inception across the globe from the ME to Pakistan to Iran and now to the Western World. As such, it would seem to be a time honored Islamic tradition!

Absolutely right, Ash. And thus we have the present situation where this Islamic Group – the OIC – at the UN is trying to push for the rights of a religion (Islam) to be incorporated into human rights. Disgraceful situation.
The reason is that it is clear that although these crimes – “honour killing” is a CRIME – A MAJOR ONE – are recognised as being primitive by many in Islam, there is such a fear of the west’s reaction to them, and the possible ensuing rejection of Islamic states at some time in the future, that they are now trying to change every belief that human rights were built on – i.e. the rights of the individual regardless of religion. And, as you say, these traditions have so deeply permeated into their societies that they will have little or no chance of removing the habit/culture for perhaps decades.
Plenty of things to discuss, I’d have thought. Enough for Wilders to get his and our teeth into.
Now we will just have to report on what he says in America.
Hope he pinpoints some of the things he might have said here if the report had had a chance to turn into a debate and not just left hanging in this farcical way.

SO much for wanting to portray a positive image of muslims! What a joke! You all come to the US and want to change our judicial system to your crazy version of what your perverted sense of law and justice is. I say behead this asshole and let him get what he deserves! That poor woman did not deserve such a horrible end to a beautiful life. Why don’t you muslim men all go back to your sand dunes and get out of the US! We don’t want you assholes here!
