Metro says – Cherie Blair in “swine flu” mystery
Since this “mystery” story has only appeared so far at The Metro website, it’s questionable if it’s reliable, or even if it’s any of our business. After all this is a private family now. Tony Blair is not the Prime Minister, in case you hadn’t noticed. And everyone catches some bug now and again without it being earth-stopping news.

Cherie Blair speaks at an "Empowering Women" conference in Manchester, on 7th May, 2009.
Perhaps we’re into the silly season already, when the papers have to look for something to get our juices flowing. Anyway, here is the Metro’s report:
Mystery surrounded the health of the wife of former prime minister Tony Blair last night as officials refused to deny that Cherie Blair has become the latest victim of swine flu.
Representatives of both sides of the Blair family refused to be drawn on the speculation.
A reliable source told Metro that Ms Blair had caught the virus and was recovering.
A spokeswoman for Cherie Blair refused to confirm or deny the story and a spokesman for Tony Blair’s office also refused to comment when approached by Metro.
It is not clear if Mr Blair or any of their four children also have the virus.”

Got that? “It is not clear”?
Now don’t get the natives all excited, Metro, in the hope that Mr Blair is about to be carried off with the dreaded lurgy.
He looked perfectly fit to me the other day, as this picture shows.
If he has now returned from the Middle East, and I’m sure he has if Cherie is ill, it’ll be to pamper her like the dutiful caring husband he undoubtedly is.
So if Cherie is ill, I wish her a quick recovery.
If it’s a typical case Cherie will likely feel better within a week, according to the government’s website here.
With 40,000 people a week ringing up their doctors about swine flu it seems we are quite concerned about it. Perhaps over-concerned.
I must admit it hasn’t crossed my mind, probably because I haven’t met anyone who’s come down with it. And because none of my family seems to have ever caught any kind of flu.
But we may just be lucky. The sea air here probably aids immunity. Far healthier than living and travelling among London commuters, which I also did for several years, and caught a cold or several as a consequence. Tube fellow-travellers have a nasty habit of coughing without covering their mouths.
I recall standing there (you invariably have to stand on London tubes in the rush hour) and holding my breath for as long as possible after a projectiled splutter exploded in my direction, unrestrained.
To all swine flu … or any other kind of flu sufferers, get well soon.

I caught swine flu and although the fever was pretty aggressive it was fairly mild case.
