Update: Just received this intriguing information from Pajamas Media. Polanski & Harris (latter quoted below on ‘autistic’ Brown’s putsch) were backed by the German government for ‘The Ghost’ film. Interesting, Ms Merkel. Will write on this more fully when time permits.

Depressed Tony Blair told Gordon Brown he would quit after Iraq war

    (Rawnsley & pasted here below)

Nov 2006, Parliament: What did the normally serious Brown find SO amusing as all around him, especially Blair, seemed lost in thought and the sobriety of the moment at the final Queen's speech for the elected prime minister, Tony Blair?

‘The “eyes” have it … the ayes have it’

I recall using this phrase regarding this photograph here of Blair and Brown at the former’s final Queen’s speech on 15th November 2006, a few months after the coup. Brown looks like the cat who finally got the cream. I found his expression on that particular occasion deeply, deeply irritating, rather juvenile and uncalled for. True, I almost invariably find the man deeply irritating, particularly since the day he and his cronies removed our prime minister without our permission.

It was odd then that Brown found the normally sombre occasion rather amusing. Especially when he is not normally easily amused. And it was out of character too to watch the expression on Tony Blair’s face.  Now we have it confirmed WHY he was evidently so low.  In his speech in parliament afterwards Blair’s spirits rose to the occasion and he left us with a remarkable performance, and a very memorable phrase:

Blair: “At the next election it will be a flyweight versus a heavyweight and however much he may dance around the ring in the end he’ll come face to face with a big clunking fist, and be out on his feet, carried out of the ring, the fifth Tory leader to be carried out, and a Labour government still standing.” (See more here)

    RAWNSLEY

Rawnsley: Depressed Tony Blair told Gordon Brown he would quit after Iraq war

Tony Blair descended into such a deep depression after the Iraq war that he told Gordon Brown and John Prescott he would quit No 10 the following summer – only to renege on the pledge within months, a new book by the Observer‘s Andrew Rawnsley reveals.

The former prime minister’s physical and mental decline was so profound that he confided to friends that he “spaced out” several times during Prime Minister’s Questions and often woke up in the middle of the night with sweat trickling down the back of his neck.

Rawnsley’s explosive account is in The End of the Party, which is published on Monday , extracts from which appear in tomorrow’s Observer. It lays bare, for the first time, how Blair was haunted and tormented by the deepening chaos and bloodshed in Iraq at the same time as being worn down by the constant psychological warfare being waged by Brown, his next-door neighbour in Downing Street, who was increasingly desperate to take his job.

While Blair’s gift for presentation helped him hide his depression from the public and most of his staff, his private turmoil was so severe that he decided there was nothing for it but to hand over to Brown midway through his second term.

Rawnsley is the first journalist to detail how Blair, in those darkest days, made clear at a dinner with both Brown and Prescott in November 2003, and later in a telephone call to Prescott in spring 2004, that he would step down.

Sally Morgan, Blair’s director of government relations, told Rawnsley: “Iraq was a quicksand swallowing him up. The atrocities. Those terrible photos [of Abu Ghraib]. And he started losing people who had supported him throughout. He was stuck in this long dark tunnel and could see no way out of it.”

The book relates how Blair’s special envoy in Iraq, the former UN ambassador, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, came to No 10 at the end of his service in Baghdad to brief the prime minister. Greenstock knew that his “very gloomy assessment” had made him highly unpopular in the building. Some at No 10 tried to keep him away, fearing the impact on Blair’s collapsing morale. In Blair’s den Greenstock warned him that the situation looked “unbelievably bad” and would get more desperate in the months to come. “What can we do?” pleaded Blair. “We have told them [the Americans] again and again what we think is necessary. If it doesn’t happen, what can we do?” Greenstock was left with the image of the prime minister “tearing his hair” over Iraq and “throwing his hands in the air”.

Rawnsley then charts how Blair – urged by his wife, Cherie, and closest political friends to pull back from the brink and deny Brown his chance – gradually recovered his self-belief and decided to fight on. The volte-face caused Brown’s frustration to turn to rage.

On one occasion Brown went round to No 10 to get an answer. One of Blair’s inner circle who witnessed this says: “Gordon was just losing it. He was behaving like a belligerent teenager. Just standing in the office shouting: ‘When are you going to fucking go?’ ”

Blair’s dark period throughout late 2003 and early 2004 was compounded by his heart complaint and anxiety that his young children were suffering at school because of the unpopular war their father had championed in Iraq. His friend and cabinet colleague Tessa Jowell says: “He was very low, he was very lonely and he was very tired.”

In November 2003, Prescott, who was acting as “referee” between the prime minister and chancellor, hosted a dinner to discuss their differences and address the succession question. Next morning a visibly excited Brown told his key aides, Ed Miliband, Ed Balls, Spencer Livermore and Sue Nye, that Blair had assured him he was going in the summer. The four were sceptical, having heard about similar promises from Blair before. But by the spring Blair was to telephone Prescott and tell him he had settled on June as his departure date.

Behind the scenes, Blair’s allies feared he was wobbling and were hatching a strategy to boost his morale. Jowell went to his study and told him: “You’re going to get through this.” Blair replied without conviction: “I’m fine, darling. Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.” Blair’s friends noticed that women were better at bolstering him than men.

Peter Mandelson told him: “Come on. Buck up. Buck up. Think of what you’ve got to achieve. You’re the best politician in this country by a mile.”

After the June local elections of 2004, which were bad for Labour but not disastrous, Blair’s zest for the job returned and he decided to stay to fight the 2005 election, which Labour won, though with a substantially reduced majority.

In autumn 2004, Blair declared he would fight the election but not lead Labour into a fourth one. But the statement led to relentless speculation about his departure date. Rawnsley reveals how, in the summer of 2006, Prescott was so frustrated with Blair’s refusal to name a handover date that he threatened to resign as deputy prime minister unless he did so.

Rawnsley: ‘Lessons from my 15 rounds in the ring with the forces of hell’

It’s strange to find yourself publicly denounced by Number 10 and privately encouraged by ministers

Halfway through my 15-round boxing match with Downing Street, I received a phone message from a friendly minister: “Andrew, just checking you’re safe, you’re all right. Great read. If you’re feeling a bit bruised, just think that’s what my life is like every day. God bless.”

This has been one of the paradoxes of finding myself nose to nose with Gordon Brown and his attack machine. The revelations about his behaviour in The End of the Party have been denounced by the prime minister as lies and attacked by his anonymous mouthpieces as “malicious falsehoods” along with a fruity variety of other desperate denials. The more they snarled, the more messages and calls I received from senior Labour figures wanting to express their solidarity and telling me to stand firm. Some offered very useful tips about how to cope in a cage fight with No 10.

Brown ‘exploded’ when Blair refused to quit

    Published Date: 28 February 2010
    By Tom Peterkin, Scotsman

GORDON Brown exploded with rage when Tony Blair backtracked on a pledge to stand down as prime minister after the Iraq war, it was claimed in a new book last night.

Brown was said to have sworn at Blair like a “belligerent teenager” after he learned he would not be leaving No 10 in the summer of 2004.

Yesterday on the unofficial campaign trail in Swansea, Brown focused on attacking the Conservatives’ new “Vote for Change” slogan, claiming a Tory government would “short-change” families.

In defiant mood, the Prime Minister joked he had been accused of everything short of killing Archie Mitchell in EastEnders. “I promise, I didn’t even lay a finger on him,” Brown said, before moving on to criticise David Cameron’s Conservatives.

Click on thumbnail to view image

Interesting. I wrote something a similar sort of denial here on 10th September 2006 -

Brown: “Whit, ME? Ah didnae dae it!

    Honest, constable.

    Never touched ‘im!

    Goat any proof?

That’s no’ ma knife, by the way, by the way!”

I’d forgotten, after all this time, but I also quoted the below, from Robert Harris.

Not, you might well ask, THE Robert Harris, surely, of The Ghost infamy? I fear it is. The very same. Looks like more than Brown saw (and see) Tony Blair as a target for knife-throwing.

Robert Harris in the Times says:

    ‘Autistic’ Brown loses the plot

A true statesman would have praised his departing master to the rooftops, but not Gordon, says Robert Harris.

    Excerpt: (My bolding)

‘Now that relationship, the axis around which British politics has turned for more than a decade, is finished, for ever. At the beginning of the week it looked as though the biggest loser of their bitter public separation was Blair. But by the end of the week there can be no doubt that the real casualty is Brown. Blair’s time at the top was almost over, whatever happened: he has nothing to lose now except his dignity, which in any case is a commodity always in short supply in politics. Brown, on the other hand, desperately needs to inherit the goodwill of a unified party if he is to have any hope of winning the next election.

This is why his behaviour has been little short of insane. We shall no doubt have to await the memoirs of the two men before we can properly reconstruct the cataclysmic meeting which took place on Wednesday. But, however one analyses it, it is clearly Brown who was ranting and demented. At one point he apparently threatened Blair with a second, third and even a fourth “wave” of resignations, for all the world like Osama Bin Laden ordering up cells of suicide bombers from his cave in Tora Bora. It is a measure of Blair’s enfeeblement that he did not simply sack him on the spot, tell him to go to hell and challenge him for the leadership if he dared.

Presumably Brown was gambling that none of this would ever emerge. Here again one sees his autism when it comes to personal relations. News of what had happened was spreading across London within hours, as it was bound to do. It is therefore not his brutality which makes one question Brown’s fitness to become prime minister — brutality can be a necessary quality in a leader — it is his criminal stupidity. And if this is the way he behaves towards the serving prime minister, can one wonder that so many of his junior colleagues, such as Charles Clarke, feel so scarred by their dealings with him, or view the prospect of a Brown premiership with trepidation?

What Brown needed to do this autumn was to treat Blair with the utmost loyalty and consideration, both in public and private.

    [...]

And this — this! — is the moment when Brown has chosen to plunge the knife into Blair. A brilliant man, yes, but a flawed one and a strange one and perhaps worst of all — an unlucky one.’

Following on from my previous post – Islamic terrorism: All About Iraq, isn’t it? – and as mentioned there briefly, I thought it was worth letting you know that ONE BRITISH POLITICIAN has finally spoken out about his concerns over Islamic infiltration, or ENTRYISM,  into the British Labour party and other parties. His name is Jim Fitzpatrick and he is Environment Minister, not just a humble backbencher. More on this in a moment.

Before I expand on this I’d like to tell you that I experienced a bid at entryism personally years ago as chairman and prospective parliamentary candidate of a constituency in one of our major cities.

It was long before 9/11.  Long before Tony Blair became British Prime minister. Long before the Iraq or Afghanistan wars. Long before there was a ‘religion’ called political correctness in Britain. And long before the British press had formed the opinion that we were doing it all wrong as regards those who had immigrated here and whose habits were and still are self-contained and organised within their groups.

(Group-think has always been important in some such immigrant groups, backed up by bullying where the follower-thinkers do not feel inclined to comply.)

I seldom talk about my past political involvement. It’s in the past and today I am not inclined to join any party. I consider leadership important and I just don’t see leadership right now, right here in Britain. The sharp-eyed regular reader might have noticed that I have made clear that I have never been a Labour party member.  But I was highly active for some years in another of the three main political parties.

    MY PERSONAL ENTRYISM EXPERIENCE

It was prior to the 1992 general election (which Labour lost again to the Conservatives.) A group of Muslims, around 70 if I recall correctly, had fallen out with the Labour party to which they had previously belonged.

They attempted to join our constituency group, which was in opposition to Labour, through various local wards.

Our constituency membership secretary, who normally had trouble signing up a few members a month, noticed a plethora of membership applications from people with Asian names. Using due diligence he found out that they had been seen as a cabal within Labour, and had left or been asked to leave that party.

NONE of them was permitted to join our party or constituency, even though we knew that signing them up would probably have meant that we could have won several wards in the upcoming local elections. But let’s not be high-minded about this. I recall that the reason they were not permitted to join was that none of them actually lived in our constituency. They had all belonged to the adjoining constituency’s wards.

I wondered then, and I wonder now to be frank, what would have happened if their addresses had actually been within our constituency boundaries. I do not believe that they would necessarily and automatically have been excluded, a “cabal” or not. In recent decades new party members have always been hard to find.

Here’s the article at the Telegraph by Andrew Gilligan (OK, I know, I know… )

    Islamic Radicals Infiltrate Labour

A Labour minister says his party has been infiltrated by a fundamentalist Muslim group that wants to create an “Islamic social and political order” in Britain.

The Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE) — which believes in jihad and sharia law, and wants to turn Britain and Europe into an Islamic state — has placed sympathisers in elected office and claims, correctly, to be able to achieve “mass mobilisation” of voters.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Jim Fitzpatrick, the Environment Minister, said the IFE had become, in effect, a secret party within Labour and other political parties.

“They are acting almost as an entryist organisation, placing people within the political parties, recruiting members to those political parties, trying to get individuals selected and elected so they can exercise political influence and power, whether it’s at local government level or national level,” he said.

“They are completely at odds with Labour’s programme, with our support for secularism.”

Mr Fitzpatrick, the MP for Poplar and Canning Town, said the IFE had infiltrated and “corrupted” his party in east London in the same way that the far-Left Militant Tendency did in the 1980s. Leaked Labour lists show a 110 per cent rise in party membership in one constituency in two years.

In a six-month investigation by this newspaper and Channel 4’s Dispatches, involving weeks of covert filming by the programme’s reporters:

    • IFE activists boasted to the undercover reporters that they had already “consolidated … a lot of influence and power” over Tower Hamlets, a London borough council with a £1 billion budget.
    • We have established that the group and its allies were awarded more than £10 million of taxpayers’ money, much of it from government funds designed to “prevent violent extremism”.
    • IFE leaders were recorded expressing opposition to democracy, support for sharia law or mocking black people. The IFE organised meetings with extremists, including Taliban allies, a man named by the US government as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and a man under investigation by the FBI for his links to the September 11 attacks.
    • Moderate Muslims in London told how the IFE and its allies were enforcing their hardline views on the rest of the local community, curbing behaviour they deemed “un-Islamic”. The owner of a dating agency received a threatening email from an IFE activist, warning her to close it.
    • George Galloway, a London MP, admitted in recordings obtained by this newspaper that his surprise victory in the 2005 election owed more to the IFE “than it would be wise – for them – for me to say, adding that they played a “decisive role” in his triumph at the polls.

Mr Galloway now says they were one of many groups which supported his anti-war stance and had never sought to influence him.

The IFE has particularly close links to Tower Hamlets council. Seven serving and former councillors said Lutfur Rahman, the current council leader, gained his post with the group’s help.

Some said they were canvassed by a senior IFE official on his behalf. After Mr Rahman was elected, a man with close links to the group, Lutfur Ali, was appointed assistant chief executive of the council with responsibility for grant funding.

This was despite a chequered employment record, a misleading CV and a negative report from the headhunters appointed to consider the candidates. The council’s white chief executive was subsequently forced from his post.

Since Mr Rahman became leader, more council grants have been paid to a number of organisations which our investigation established are closely linked to the IFE.

Funding for other, secular groups was ended or cut. In the borough’s well-known Brick Lane area, council funds were switched from a largely secular heritage trail to a highly controversial “hijab sculpture”, angering many residents who accused the council of “religious triumphalism”.

Schools in Tower Hamlets are told by the council should close for the Muslim festival of Eid, even where most of their pupils are not Muslim.

Mr Rahman refused to deny that an IFE activist had canvassed councillors on his behalf. He said: “There are various people across Tower Hamlets who get excited, who get involved.”

He would not comment on concerns about infiltration, saying they were “party matters”. He said: “If you look at our flagship policies, like investing £20 million to tackle overcrowding, you can see that we are working for everyone.”

The IFE said it did not seek to influence the council and had not lobbied for Mr Rahman. “If anything, existing members of the Labour Party have joined the IFE, rather than the other way round,” it said.

The group insisted it was not a fundamentalist or extremist organisation and did not support violence.

    Deniers deny … people die

Today’s terrorism is all about Iraq, isn’t it?

    That’s right. It isn’t.

Thousands of Deadly Islamic Terror Attacks Since 9/11

This excerpt – “It’s All About Iraq, Isnt It?” -  is at the bottom of the present home page at The Religion of Peace, and I have reproduced it below. It might be tough reading for those who think hanging is too good for the arch-villains Blair & Bush – the main “causes” of all this murder of innocents. Presumably, since such people in Britain and the west see NO danger in creeping sharia or our parliament’s gradual take-over from within (as mentioned today by Jim Fitzpatrick a British government minister, no less) the haters of Blair & Bush will be content to wait for a decade or so. Then, with a bit of luck, disembowelling might be the preferred punishment meted out to “infidels” by our once-western governments. With a stoning and hanging just to make sure.

The deniers can deny to their shallow hearts’ content. The truth, for those who are REALLY interested in TRUTH, and not in laying the blame for all the world’s catastrophes at the feet of western politicians, is historical and provable.

    WHERE ARE TODAY’S COURAGEOUS POLITICIANS?

WHERE? MESSRS BROWN, CAMERON, CLEGG… WHERE?

Some of us – a comparative few – have known for some years, even decades that courageous politicians would be needed to tackle fundamentalist religious/political terrorism whether emanating from individuals, dictatorships, rogue states, autonomous organisations, factions of factions or even democratic Islamic states.

When we found such politicians in the west, and watched the murder of innocent Muslims by other Muslims, we immediately denounced the western politicians as pro-war, pro-USA’s geo-political interests, pro-Israel, pro-New World Order as well as anti-Arab, anti-Palestinian, anti-Iraqi, anti-freedom, anti-humanity. And we disparaged their every motive.

We were wrong of course. There is little, very little attention paid to the fact that here in the west, or at least in Britain, our freedom of speech ALLOWS us, journalist and armchair generals all, to opine in ways which would bring severe punishment, including death on our equivalent free speakers in many Middle East countries.

There is also very little attention paid to the instruction that the koran is immutable. It cannot be altered. It cannot be updated. It cannot have its words of violence relegated to an earlier time. It IS a living book. And its words of hatred and death to disbelievers apply today as they did 1600 years ago.

Now courage needs to be shown from ALL sides.

WHERE ARE THE ISLAMIC LEADERS CALLING FOR A HALT TO THIS DAILY CARNAGE? WHERE?

Where are the courageous Islamic leaders today? Where are those starting a multi-faith organisation with the aim of working towards a more compassionate, less ideologically indoctrinated future, where ALL religions can work alongside one another in mutual respect, tolerance and NON-VIOLENCE? Where is the Muslim equivalent of this organisation?

There are those who criticise my blog’s tendency to alternate between the narrative of supporting Tony Blair and his record on the one hand, and on the other hand raising my serious concerns about Islamist militancy, seemingly unbound, even in the west.

I’ve had e-mails and comments to the effect that Tony Blair would never insinuate that ALL Muslims are terrorists, and that as a supporter of his nor should I.

Let me make one thing clear -

THEY’RE right. Blair doesn’t EVER so insinuate, and nor do I.

But while those on the liberal left, right and centre of western politics continue to deny that Islamic fundamentalists are behind almost all of the world’s present terrorist attacks, I WILL CONTINUE to show them the facts – Tony Blair supporters or not.

    1. Muslim voters’ loyalty to Labour

    Excerpt:

The Iraq war was supposed to have poisoned Labour‘s relations with British Muslims. Tony Blair’s apparently unqualified support for a bellicose Republican administration despised around the Muslim world was deeply unpalatable. Years of anti-terror legislation were judged by some to have stigmatised Muslims and fanned Islamophobic flames. The government’s attempt to outlaw religious hate speech was seen, by sceptics at least, as simply a desperate, ill-thought through peace offering with which they might woo disaffected Muslim supporters.

According to new Theos/ComRes research, however, no wooing is necessary. If there were a general election tomorrow, 35% of voting Muslims (meaning those Muslims who claim they are more likely than not to vote) would vote Labour. This compares with 22% of voting Christians and 23% of the entire voting population. By comparison, whereas 30% of the voting population would tick the Conservative box, only 13% of voting Muslims would do so.

    3. How to stifle free speech

    Excerpt:

But even in the West, freedom is an endowment, not an entitlement. Generation after generation must have the courage to defend what we used to call, without embarrassment, “the blessings of liberty.”

That means recognizing that a war is being waged against what we used to call, also without embarrassment, the Free World. This war is being waged by an enemy many are reluctant to name: Islamists. They are fighting not only with AK-47s and I.E.D.s in such places as Afghanistan and Somalia. They also are fighting with actions, ideas and laws in such places as Europe and America. They are fighting a pitched battle against freedom of speech — the right without which other rights cannot be protected.

And, at this moment, the West is putting up a feeble defense. We are accepting government prohibitions on the thoughts we may express, we are allowing extremists to shout us down and shut us up, and we are self-censoring out of fear or faux-sensitivity. A few examples?

Start with the Dutch government’s prosecution of Geert Wilders, a Member of Parliament who has expressed unfavorable opinions of the Islamic faith and the Koran. Such views may cause offense. But they cannot be criminalized in any country that values freedom.

Clearly Tony, George and Condoleezza still get together from time to time.

Blair commends Nigeria, Acting Pesident Jonathan commends Blair

Former British Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, last Saturday said Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and the ”institution of Government” in Nigeria have handled the difficult situation in the country with skill.

Blair congratulated the Acting President on his assumption of office, saying the Government of the United Kingdom was pleased with the resolution of the political situation in Nigeria.

Blair, who spoke to newsmen after meeting with the Acting President at the Presidential Villa, described the current situation in Nigeria as ”unique and pretty difficult.

“I say to the Acting President that I want to thank him for the wise way he and the institution of Nigerian government have handled themselves in last few days and I want to say it has been a pretty the difficult situation and I think they have handled it with skill,” Blair said.

Giving insight into his closed-door discussions with Jonathan, Blair noted that the Acting President and the Nigerian legislature had shown a willingness to ensure that Nigeria moved forward “in a proper way.”

”He (Acting President) was explaining to me the importance of maintaining the right constitutional process and we both agree that one of the greatest things to have happened is returning democratic government and we would want to see that maintained.

    [...]

“That relationship is a strong one, and I want it to stay strong.

“I have done lots of work with the previous president of Nigeria while I was in the office and we know that without Nigeria fulfilling its potentials and exacting its leadership, it will be greatly difficult for the whole of Africa.”

Speaking at the closed-door session, the Acting President extolled relations between Nigeria and the UK, describing it as very cordial.

Jonathan appreciated the British Government for its solidarity and encouragement to Nigeria on the recent political development , and expressed optimism that both countries will continue to strengthen ties between each other.

The Acting President said the Federal Government is committed to institutionalizing good governance and credible elections in the country.

    [...]

He commended Blair for his commitment to Africa and acknowledged his support towards developmental initiatives on the continent.

    BEDNETS TO FIGHT MALARIA

Since July 2008 Mr Blair’s Faith Foundation has also been foremost in the bednet/end malaria campaign in Africa. See video here.

Tony Blair Lends Support To Malaria Fight

From Neal Walker, Sky News Online, 21st February

Former prime minister Tony Blair has called for concerted efforts to combat malaria during a visit to Nigeria.

The country accounts for a quarter of the one million malaria deaths annually in Africa.

“Malaria has no barrier and does not discriminate. When we think of malaria we think particularly of children and women, and how to prevent it becomes particularly imperative,” Mr Blair said.

He was attending a training workshop of Christian and Muslim faith leaders on ways to combat malaria.

Some 75 million Nigerians – half the population – get infected with malaria at least once a year, while around 24 million children under the age of five suffer up to four bouts each year.

The workshop focused on the use of bed nets to help prevent contracting malaria, which is a mosquito-borne disease.

The government plans to roll out 62 million bed nets in a country where nearly 300,000 people succumb to malaria each year.

Around 97% of the 150 million Nigerians are at risk of infection, says Roll Back Malaria, a global initiative aiming to eradicate the disease.

Blair lauded Africa’s largest Muslim and Christian alliance, the Nigerian Inter-Faith Action Association (NIFAA), for its role in combating malaria.

“This model of inter-faith action can be readily adopted to join the state and public sector in other developing countries if government and funders are willing to provide external support to make this a reality,” he said.

“That is at the heart of my own faith foundation. When faith communities collaborate and work together for justice and human development, there is a pay-off. That is, things get done and then respect and understanding between them grows,” Mr Blair added.

Blair arrived in Nigeria on Friday on an African tour that will also take him to Liberia and Sierra Leone.

    THISDAY’s Nigeria at 50, 2010 Awards

“BLAIR LED G7 TO GET NIGERIA DEBT RELIEF”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, who is in Nigeria for the THISDAY’s Nigeria at 50, 2010 Awards, yesterday relived the diplomatic interactions that contributed to the success of their administrations.

Speaking at an Inter-faith Malaria Initiative organised by the Nigeria Inter-faith Action Association with funding support from Federal Government, World Bank, Centre for Inter-faith Action on Global Poverty and the Tony Blair Faith Foundation held at the Kuje Town Hall in Abuja, Obasanjo said the former British premier made a significant contribution to Nigeria’s exit from the Paris Club and other creditor nations.

Obasanjo, whose entry into the venue of the event elicited wild, nostalgic cheers from the audience, said while he travelled round the globe to get Nigeria off the Paris Club debt yoke, he received promises from world leaders which were not fruitful thus prompting his government to search for a facilitator and a member of the Group of Seven industrialised nations (G7) which they found in Mr. Blair.

He said the debt relief allowed the country to channel resources into the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) projects notably funds needed to fight infant mortality and morbidity occasioned by such diseases as malaria.
“Since I left public office, I have engaged in issues of health and education which are very critical and I have always looked for an opportunity to meet Tony Blair and say thank you.

“In my eight years of leadership, Blair was in the vanguard of support in the area of health but more importantly in the area of debt relief. I visited world leaders but we needed somebody in G7 to get us debt relief. Blair led G7 to get us debt relief.
“What that has done for us is that the money we would have used to service debt is now being used on MDGs for infant mortality and other things. The money we used for the MDGs came from there,” he said.

He commended the inter-faith initiative which he said was deployed under his administration to tackle HIV/AIDS and it worked.
“People hear Nigeria as a land of religious crisis and destruction of lives. This one is about peace. Why are we not telling the world that we are religious and not religious fanatics. What we hear after the terror incident involving Nigeria is that when we call terrorism, Americans catch cold,” he said, eliciting laughter from the audience.

In his remarks, the former British premier recalled that he spoke severally with President Obasanjo on his African Commission initiative which led to the commitment of huge sums of money to alleviation of poverty in Africa for which the former president was instrumental.

He commended religious leaders notably the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop John Onaiyekan, for their commitment in the fight against malaria and noted that the coming together of religious leaders on the effort to eradicate malaria and other initiatives would go a long way in ensuring religious harmony in the country.

“The issue of religious faith will be of the same significance to the 21st century as political ideology was to the 20th century. In an era of globalisation, there is nothing more important than getting people of different faiths and cultures to understand each other better and live in peace and mutual respect; and to give faith itself its proper place in the future,” he said.

Also yesterday, Blair visited Acting President Goodluck Jonathan at his Akinola Aguda residence, Presidential Villa, Abuja and commended him for holding the country together in the face of the daunting political leadership facing the country.
Blair also expressed concern about recent political developments in the country and thanked Jonathan for the skilful way he has handled the country.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the end of about 30 minutes parley with Jonathan, Blair expressed satisfaction that the relation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom had remained very strong over the years. He expressed the hope that Nigeria would continue to play a leading role in the African continent as it’s mandatory on her.

Said Blair: “First of all I would say I am delighted to have seen the Acting President and to discuss with him and hear from him the situation here in Nigeria and the wider region and we were able to talk about some of the issues that are of mutual interest to the relationship between Britain and Nigeria. That relationship is a strong one, and I want it to stay strong.

“I have done lots of work with the previous president of Nigeria while I was in the office and all of Africa and we know that without Nigeria fulfilling its potentials and exacting its leadership, it will be greatly difficult for the whole of Africa.

“I said to the Acting President that I want to thank him for the wise way he and the institution of Nigeria government have handled themselves in the last few days and I want to say it has been a pretty difficult situation and I think they have handled it with skill.”
When asked what the response of Jonathan was on the issues discussed. Blair said, “He was explaining to me the importance of maintaining the right constitutional process and we both agree that one of the greatest things to have happened is returning to democratic government and we would want to see that maintained.

    PLUS CA CHANGE

    ‘CYNICAL PRESS’ (2002)

February, 2002 – Press cynics blasted by Blair in Ghana.

‘Tony Blair has arrived in Ghana from Nigeria where he had earlier launched his fiercest attack yet on the “cynics” who criticise his global ambitions.

Addressing Nigeria’s national assembly in the capital, Abuja, he said there is nowhere to hide from international terrorism, crime and drug traffickers.

And, without naming the Conservative Party or other critics, he said: “The cynics say ‘why should we succeed now when we have failed before’, but that is what they have said throughout human history.

“If we listened to them we would still be in the dark ages.”‘

ARE THE CYNICS STILL CRITICISING HIS GLOBAL AMBITIONS? OF COURSE NOT. THEY’RE IGNORING THE PROGRESS HIS AMBITIONS HELPED DEVELOP & SUSTAIN.

    FOOTNOTE

Just as Tony Blair was ending his African trip Nigeria’s ailing, but not elderly president Umaru Yar’Adua returned to the country

President Umaru Yar’Adua was taken to a clinic in the presidential palace but his condition is unknown and it is unclear whether he is capable of resuming his duties.

Two aeroplanes landed in the dead of night at the sealed-off international airport in the capital, Abuja, and a convoy of government vehicles including an ambulance were seen speeding along the heavily guarded highway back to the city.

“I can confirm that the President has returned,” Mary Ikoku, a spokesperson at the Ministry of Information, told the Telegraph. “I have not seen him myself so I don’t know his condition.

“He arrived in what I can call an air ambulance and he was transferred to Aso Rock, so I don’t imagine he is in the best of health.” Aso Rock is the presidential palace, located just outside the capital, Abuja.

“We are sure he will be back to work soon,” added Ikoku. She said that she did not know whether Yar’Adua would attend a rescheduled cabinet meeting later on Wednesday.

The 58-year old leader arrived from Jeddah, where he was being treated for acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the fibrous sac that surrounds the heart.

He has not been seen in public and has issued only one brief statement since he left for Saudi Arabia in November, forcing government officials to approve a temporary transfer of power to his vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan, earlier this month.

But Yar’Adua’s return has created fresh confusion over who is in charge and renewed fears of a constitutional crisis.

The acting President postponed a cabinet meeting on Wednesday and summoned ministers to a briefing. Analysts say he has been behaving in an increasingly assertive fashion.

Adding to the confusion, an unnamed ally of Yar’Adua told Reuters news agency “the acting presidency lapses once the president sets foot on the shores of Nigeria”.

A spokesman at the British Embassy in Nigeria said “we continue to encourage the government of Nigeria to act in a way that is consistent with the constitution and the principles of democracy and the rule of law, as they have done during President Yar’Adua’s absence.”

Quite what this will mean for Nigeria in the next 50 days, far less 50 years, is an open question.

    Ban Blair-Baiting

    GoPetition

    26th February, 2010

Stan Rosenthal’s PAID advertisement “Ban Blair-Baiting” which simply calls for the fair reporting of Tony Blair and the case for war at the Iraq Inquiry has been on the Press Gazette’s website for  a number of weeks now.

The ad is fairly innocuous. It doesn’t ask for others to arrest Blair, and to put their hands in their pockets for the right to do so. It doesn’t chase around the internet for signatories to indict him at The Hague. It’s evidently not playing the game.

Neither does the ad insist that Mr Blair is completely innocent of all ‘charges’, although NONE have actually been made in this “not a trial”. That little technicality has little influence on the fact that the press seem to have concluded that he is “guilty” of all sorts of “crimes”.

Nor does the ad suggest, by the way, that he is JC or Mother Theresa re-incarnated. The rolling ad says ONLY this:

‘Yes, we all want the facts on Britain’s part in the Iraq war/But an open inquiry is one thing/Reporting it in a highly selective, slanted and misleading way to vilify our former Prime Minister is quite another/Show your contempt for this kind of media coverage by signing our online petition.’

Interested, fair-minded and balanced journalists are then invited to click through to the Ban Blair-Baiting petition here

The attack hounds, aka the British press, are STILL at Blair's throat despite the ad at their favourite website. What a crowd! Not ONE of them has agreed that Tony Blair too deserves fair reporting at the Iraq Inquiry. That would be to agree that he hasn't had it thus far. And that would NEVER do. Turkeys and Christmas?

The results of this call for fair reporting by Mr Rosenthal? For the man who PAID for this ad out of his own pocket when it became clear to him that this charge of unfair reporting would never be alluded to by the guilty parties – the press – themselves?

Well, as you might imagine he has been inundated with support from British journalists. NOT. ALL British journalist read this website, and reportedly quite a few MPs too, and yet …

Prior to the publishing of this ad there were only three British journalists who had signed the petition – John Rentoul , Oliver Kamm and Stephen Pollard

Today there are still three journalists.

You might have thought that if all journalists visiting the site opposed the ad, some of them might at least have made some comment on it in their columns or blogs. After all it raises important issues about the way the media are reporting the inquiry, it is newsworthy in that someone has paid to put up a highly controversial ad aimed at them at their own newspaper’s site, and it has been staring them in the face for the past few weeks every time they visit the site.  Yet this huge elephant in their room continues to be completely ignored by those who generally make a story out of the most trivial of matters.  Even when a comment to this effect was posted at The Gazette Editor’s Blog not one journalist has deigned to respond to it.

One can only assume that they are embarrassed about the message being conveyed because they have no answers to it.  As with an unwelcome guest at a party they are simply turning their backs on it and are just waiting for it to go away.  As a result, a crucial perspective on the role of the media in our affairs is not being allowed to appear in the public domain.

So much for the Press being the bastion of free speech in this country!

The ad has also been uploaded to YouTube by Julie, with the background ALL-KNOWING chants of the protestors outside the Iraq Inquiry on 29th January when Mr Blair appeared. I attended the afternoon session on that day if you’d like to see my report here.

This is the third African country in the last week that Mr Blair has visited as part of his Africa Government Inititiave, the others being Nigeria and Liberia.

Tony Blair discusses with Sierra Leone's President Koroma the good governance inititiave. (Wonder if Gordon's thinking of calling him in.)

Just dashed downstairs for a quick coffee, switched on the BBC TV news and heard this at 6:15pm-ish:

“… in the treatment of former terrorist suspect Binyam Mohamed”

    WHAT?

No “British resident” or “former Guantanamo Bay detainee”?

No implanting the thought that he is British or an innocent victim of abuse at the hands of those nasty Americans?

    I almost dropped my coffee.

Has the BBC seen the light?

Granted I didn’t see the entire BBC bulletin, so they may have opened with the ‘British … Guantanamo’ words, which is their usual fare.

So, I won’t hold my breath, but this is almost a first. Welcome clarity regarding for whom exactly WE in Britain seem  prepared to throw out centuries of hard-earned trust in our security services, our system of government, our legal values and our freedoms, not to mention decades of tried and proven shared trust with our close allies the Americans.

Thank you. I almost feel like calling the Beeb “auntie” again.

MI5. Guess what, Gordon? I agree with you entirely. And so will the public.

    Brown: “We Do Not Torture”

    Got it?

    Good.

Now kindly put a sock in it, Chakrabarti, Clegg and mates. We KNOW who is protecting our country’s security, liberty and democracy and it ain’t YOU.

    Article follows:

‘GORDON Brown today strongly defended MI5 after the Security Service was strongly criticised by a senior judge over its role in the case of former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Binyam Mohamed.

The Prime Minister said in a statement that he had spoken to MI5 director general Jonathan Evans to express his gratitude for the work the service did protecting the public.

He also announced that the Government would “shortly” be publishing its revised guidelines for the intelligence agencies on the treatment of detainees held overseas.

“The United Kingdom has the finest intelligence services in the world. I have seen for myself their immense bravery and expertise in our defence,” Mr Brown said.

“It is the nature of the work of the intelligence services that they cannot defend themselves against many of the allegations that have been made. But I can – and I have every confidence that their work does not undermine the principles and values that are the best guarantee of our future security.

“We condemn torture without reservation. We do not torture, and we do not ask others to do so on our behalf. We are clear that officials must not be complicit in mistreatment of detainees.

“Wherever serious allegations of potential criminal wrongdoing are made, they are referred to the appropriate authorities.”

Mr Brown was responding to the words of Lord Neuberger, the Master of the Rolls, who said denials by the Security Service of knowing of any ill treatment of US terror suspect detainees “does not seem to have been true” in Mr Mohamed’s case.

The judge ruled the evidence showed that “some Security Services officials appear to have a dubious record relating to actual involvement, and frankness about any such involvement, with the mistreatment of Mr Mohamed when he was held at the behest of US officials”.

The judge’s remarks led to further calls for a full public inquiry into allegations that the UK has been complicit in torture.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: “I am deeply disappointed that the court has decided to criticise the Security Service in this way.”

Mr Mohamed says he was tortured in Pakistan in 2002 while held by the US, with the knowledge of MI5.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband asked the Court of Appeal to block a High Court decision to publish a seven-paragraph summary of what MI5 knew about his ill treatment.

The summary showed MI5 was aware Mr Mohamed was being continuously deprived of sleep, threatened with rendition and being subjected to “significant mental stress and suffering”.

Earlier this month, Lord Neuberger and two other top appeal judges – Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice, and Sir Anthony May, President of the Queen’s Bench Division, rejected Mr Miliband’s appeal against the High Court summary becoming public knowledge.

A dispute erupted between the Government and the court over a key paragraph in a draft version of Lord Neuberger’s judgment.

Jonathan Sumption QC, representing the Foreign Secretary, said paragraph 168 went “well beyond” anything found by the High Court judges.

As a result the judge altered the paragraph – leading to accusations that he was “watering down” his ruling – and said he would further reconsider it.

Today he reverted to the original paragraph, with limited modifications, saying its findings were “fully supported” by the evidence.’

MI5 record on ex-Guantanamo detainee Mohamed ‘dubious’ – excerpt -

MI5 officers have been accused by a senior judge of having a “dubious record” over the treatment of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed.

Lord Neuberger said some officers had been less than frank about what they knew about Mr Mohamed’s ill-treatment.

His criticism was made public after an exceptionally unusual court decision to publish his draft legal opinion on MI5′s respect for human rights.

Foreign secretary David Miliband rejected the suggestion MI5 had lied.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said he was “deeply disappointed” by the ruling.

    [...]

The judge accepted that his opinion of MI5′s record should be restricted to facts in the Binyam Mohamed case.

NOTE: Anything Shami Chakrabarti agrees with is seriously questionable as far as I am concerned.
