Great rendition of an inspirational song, in case the new envoy isn’t driven enough already. Some different words in places than on the original Peter O’Toole version from the show – Man Of La Mancha (below). Maybe he didn’t fancy the “chaste” bit!
The Jones Boy (not THAT one, the other one) sings it GOOD! Jack Jones has a lovely lyrical voice – probably comes from his Welsh ancestry.
LYRICS – “THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM” (My Quest)
Music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion
Lyrics as on the Jack Jones version
Verse 1
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
Verse 2
To right the unrightable wrong
To be better far than you are
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
Chorus
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To be willing to give
When there’s no more to give
To be willing to die so that honour and justice may live
Verse 3
And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
Verse 4
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable stars
ORIGINAL LYRICS – THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM (My Quest)
Lyrics as on the Matt Monro version and in the show, “Man of La Mancha”
Verse 1
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
Verse 2
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
Chorus
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause
Verse 3
And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
Verse 4
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable stars
My Favourite – “Born Free” – Because I love the lyrics, the sentiment and the simple, powerful tune. Matt Monro – the UK’s Sinatra! And Sinatra thought so too. Matt was always on the note. Breath control fantastic. All untrained. Amazing.
Watch You Tube excerpt from the 1972 film, “Man of La Mancha” – with Peter O’Toole and Sophia Loren. Great acting – but for singing, it’s got to be Jack or Matt, imho.

Wonderful! But now you should add the version sung at Teddy Kennedy’s Celebration of Life service last Friday, Aug. 28. Best yet!
