SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER?
From Israeli navy warship: “Captain, by ignoring this order you are putting your crew members and your motor vessel at risk. You alone are responsible for the consequences of your action.”
Unedited Radio Transmission Between Gaza Flotilla and Israeli Navy
We’re helping Arabs go and get the US. Don’t forget 9/11, guys.
This transmission had originally cited the Mavi Marmara ship as being the source of these remarks, however, due to an open channel, the specific ship or ships in the “Freedom Flotilla” responding to the Israeli Navy could not be identified. During radio transmissions between Israeli Navy and the ships of the “Free Gaza” Flotilla on 31 May 2010, the Israeli Navy ship attempts to make contact with the ‘Defne Y’ on channel 1-6. Other ships from the flotilla respond on the channel, without identifying themselves. At some point during the radio exchange the Israeli Navy is told by one of the ships to “shut up, go back to Auschwitz” (2:05) and “don’t forget 9-11″ (5:42).
Now read this from the tenacious truth-finding CIFWatch
Accusation That Flotilla “Auschwitz” Exchange Was Faked Exposed As, errr, Fake
This is a cross-post by Ben Cohen of Z-Word
The IDF has now released an official clarification regarding the audio released yesterday of a radio communication in which a flotillista tells the Israeli Navy to “Go Back to Auschwitz.” Bottom line: the exchange is genuine. Those who questioned its authenticity – like Max Blumenthal and Ali Abunimah – have yet again revealed to the world that their grasp of such trifling matters as truth and falsehood is shaky at best.
The accusation that the audio was fake rested on the following “A-ha!” moment: labeled on YouTube as originating from the Mavi Marmara, the audio contained the voice of a passenger (Huwaida Arraf of the ghastly International Solidarity Movement) who was traveling on another ship in the flotilla. The IDF subsequently explained that the audio was incorrectly labeled, because what was recorded came from an open channel which all the ships in the flotilla could access. In any other context, the mislabeling would be seen as an honest, and rather insignificant, mistake, but in the fevered imagination of Max Blumenthal, it becomes a conspiracy.
Now that the principal argument for the faking accusation has been decisively hobbled, what other evidence exists to support Blumenthal? He accepts that the exchange occurred, if only because his pal Huwaida makes an appearance. So is he saying that the IDF doctored the tape and inserted the voices? Read his blog and you’ll see that he is, because he doesn’t find the foreign accents he hears convincing (I’ll bet Blumenthal hasn’t met that many foreigners, so he doesn’t get that one person can speak with American, Arabic, Francophone and many other inflections in their voice.) Not quite the smoking gun, in any case.
Back in the real world, the Rachel Corrie docked in Ashdod without incident and Hamas is back to doing what it does best: making the lives of ordinary Gazans a hellish misery. Since Blumenthal is unlikely to write about any of these things, perhaps he might find a moment to pen a quick retraction/humble apology for making accusations that are, to use his favorite word, “idiotic.”
Tom Gross reports in his latest Mideast Dispatch Archive:
The British paper The Guardian has been running headlines such as “British survivor tells of Israeli assault on Gaza aid ship” and speaking of “survivors” – the latest in a long line of hints that Israel is carrying out some kind of Holocaust.
As AKUS wr0te here these are not the only Nazi analogies that are making their rounds in the Guardian.
To read the rest of Tom Gross’ excellent report including the full Charles Krauthammer article, which if you haven’t read yet is a must read, click here.
OK, I’ll add some here for those whose clicking fingers have frozen up with the injustice of it all:
* Revealed: Offspring of bin Laden mentor, Afghan veterans were on Mavi Marmari
Reliable Palestinian sources have revealed that among the activists who were onboard the Mavi Marmari were the grandson and son-in-law of Sheikh Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, the radical teacher and mentor of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Azzam’s 19-year-old grandson, Muhammad, was accompanied by his father, Abdullah Anas, who is married to the sheikh’s daughter, Summaya. Another grandson, Ahmed, 17, is planning to join the next convoy to Gaza.
In a speech he made while in Brooklyn, Azzam urged his followers to wage jihad in the U.S. He explained that jihad “means fighting only, fighting with the sword.” […]
AFGHAN VETERAN ON MAVI MARMARA
Further sources reveal that Azzam’s son-in-law, who is listed amongst the British participants under his birth name, Boudjema Bounoua, was himself a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and a senior figure in the Afghan jihad, where he fought for several years.
He is credited with establishing the Makhtab al-Kidmat, which brought Arab fighters to Afghanistan and is generally seen as the forerunner of al-Qaeda. After Afghanistan he is said to have become a senior figure in the Algerian FIS before settling in Britain.
Tom Gross adds: If Israel was prepared to use fire from the helicopter … why on earth was it necessary for the IDF soldiers to be beaten up on the boat?
* Charles Krauthammer: “The world is tired of these troublesome Jews, 6 million – that number again – hard by the Mediterranean, refusing every invitation to national suicide. For which they are relentlessly demonized, ghettoized and constrained from defending themselves, even as the more committed anti-Zionists – Iranian in particular – openly prepare a more final solution.” (Tom Gross adds: The Jewish population of Israel is now approaching 6 million.)
*The Washington Post: “Last week the Obama administration joined the [international] jackals [circling Israel], and reversed four decades of U.S. practice, by signing onto a consensus document that singles out Israel’s possession of nuclear weapons – thus de-legitimizing Israel’s very last line of defense.”
* Local UN staff condemn Hamas “repressive” raids on NGO offices in Gaza City and Rafah this week; international media refuse to report on this.
* Washington Post Gaza correspondent: “If you walk down Gaza City’s main thoroughfare – Salah al-Din Street – grocery stores are stocked wall-to-wall with everything from fresh Israeli yogurts and hummus to Cocoa Puffs. Pharmacies look as well-supplied as a typical Rite Aid in the United States.”
If you still don’t accept that at least some of the boat activists were terrorists intent on violence, take a look at this video. Why the numerous knives, catapults, other heavy weaponry? This was a planned exercise by the ‘peace’ activists.
Weaponry Overview and Footage of Mavi Marmara Passengers Preparing Weaponry
idfnadesk — 03 June 2010 — The opening footage of the video shows knives, rods, wrenches, gas masks, bulletproof vests, and binoculars found on the ship and gathered at the Port of Ashdod. IDF soldiers then reenact how rioters prepared weaponry by using electric saws to remove metal poles from the stairs and other parts of the ship in order to attack the soldiers. The closing seconds of the film come from actual footage found on the Marmara showing the demonstrators preparing the weaponry.
In the early hours of the 31st of May 2010, IDF soldiers boarded the ships of the “Free Gaza” Flotilla, after the ships refused to redirect their course. Aboard the Mavi Marmara the soldiers encountered serious violence when, in a preplanned attack, the activists on board lynched the soldiers with knives, metal rods and stole two of their guns. As a result 7 soldiers were injured and 9 activists were killed.
IDF UPDATES (my bolding)
5 June 2010
Moments ago the ship which was boarded earlier today by IDF naval forces docked at the Israeli port of Ashdod, after attempting to break the maritime closure of the Gaza Strip.
Nineteen people were onboard the boat, including eight crew members, all of whom will be transferred to the custody of the appropriate authorities in the Interior Ministry. The cargo found onboard will be transferred to the Gaza Strip following security inspection.
Earlier today, naval soldiers boarded the ship with the full compliance of the crew and without incident, and instructed the ship’s captain to sail to and dock at the Ashdod port.
Any organization or country wishing to transfer humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip can do so legally via the established crossings by coordinating with the relevant authorities, as is done on a near daily basis.
