What do you think of it so far?

This is not to make light of the dreadful position for protesters in most of these lands. Their governments are showing us exactly WHY democracy is needed. It’s just a suggestion that people, there AND here, lower their expectations. Rome, as they say, was not built in a day.

And there’s always Bahrain whose present leadership has arguably, despite a number of deaths, fared better than most, thus far.

Interestingly, there’s also a democracy, almost touching Europe, up in arms –  Morocco

Democracy, or something similar, is attempting to take root right across the region, touching two continents. But perhaps not democracy as we western liberal democrats know it.

The people in these Middle East and North African countries should be applauded for calling for far better systems of governance than they presently have.

But, with this proviso: they and we need to understand that it took us decades if not centuries to install, distil and refine liberal democracies in the west. And even now many complain that it is “not working” and needs constant tweaking.

So, exhilarating as it is for oppressed peoples to find their voices after decades, even centuries of oppression, and exciting as it for the rest of us to watch, miracles may take a little longer.

I am staggered by all the hate directed towards our former Prime Minister. I believe that Tony Blair made the Iraq decision in good faith and is most certainly NOT a war criminal. If anyone should be tried at the Hague it should be those in the media for totally misrepresenting the information and facts. The media are to blame for fuelling this hatred as it is purely driven by them. (UK)

The greatest and most successful leader the Labour Party has ever had with the courage to fight the Islamist terrorists who really would like to kill us all, and you never hear a good word about him. The herd of independent minds, commentators, activists etc who have never had to make a difficult decision in their lives drown out all debate with their inane chants of war crimes and blood on his hands. Defend him at every chance. I just wish more people would do it. (Glasgow, UK)
Blair was the greatest Labour Prime Minister. It is a disgrace that the party has turned away from his legacy. Shame on Ed Miliband and his so-called ‘new generation’.
